NEWSLETTER WINTER 2021
Dear Member

With both our national vaccination roll-out and the third wave of the pandemic gathering steam, this jam-packed issue of our newsletter covers a wide range of Covid-19 related issues - from the practical arrangements around getting vaccinated, to the long-term effects of Covid, including mental health issues.

In terms of especially mental health, know that there is help available. See one of our previous articles on stress levels here, and also remember that the Scheme can help if you are suffering from a more serious mental health disorder. Email nedgroupmentalhealth@medscheme.co.za or call 0860 106 155 to find out whether you qualify for our Mental Health Programme.

Please bear in mind that even though progress has been made with procuring vaccines for our country, it will take time before sufficient numbers of the general public have been vaccinated. Until then, we all need to continue following public health strategies such as social distancing, wearing masks in public, and hand washing, to help reduce the transmission of the virus and the number of infections.

Also be aware that the extremely transmissible Delta variant, which seems to be driving the current surge of infections in especially Gauteng, is causing symptoms that are different to those of previous infections. Sneezing, a runny nose and a sore throat (in addition to headache, which was also common previously) are now the most common symptoms, so please don't think you just have a head cold if you experience these symptoms - rather have yourself tested for Covid-19 and isolate if necessary.

Stay healthy, and stay safe!

Julia

PS: The situation around Covid-19 and especially the vaccination roll-out is constantly changing – the information in this newsletter is current as at this point in time.
